The day Jambo acted as bodyguard for boy who fell into enclosure

Levan Merritt, who was then aged five, was on holiday in the Island in 1986 with his family when he fell 12 feet onto the concrete below, fracturing his skull and breaking a wrist.

As he lay unconscious, Jambo, the 28-stone silverback male, gently touched the boy, pushing a female gorilla away and placing himself between Levan and the rest of the troop.
