Paul Brown, deputy chief fire officer, said the service’s volunteer team has ‘dwindled’ in recent years, and the service was keen to relaunch a unit to focus on preventative measures.
The aim would be for volunteers to support firefighters during these public engagement activities so that they could continue even when the full-time staff are called to an emergency.
Mr Brown added that the service wanted to boost the number of home fire-safety visits it does per year to around 500 and hoped at least 300 could be carried out by volunteers.
