Extra police for Poland game against Portugal

While the States force say they are not expecting trouble, they have stressed that they do have to ensure that every precaution is taken.

Issues have erupted in the past between football fans of nations with strong populations in the Island. In 2004 police dressed in riot gear had to create a human-barrier between England and Portugal fans when tensions overflowed during a quarter-final match at that year’s European Championships. Portugal won the match on penalties.

In addition to the normal shift of officers, Chief Inspector Matt Le Monnier, head of uniformed operations for the States police, said a ‘dedicated team’ would be drafted in for support.
