Will tougher cyber-bullying laws ‘stifle’ free speech?

Last month the States approved in principle updates to the law to allow stricter regulation of online communication carried out using websites such as Facebook, twitter and web-logs, and introduce tougher penalties against abusive posters or trolls, including unlimited fines and up to two years in prison.

But Neil McMurray, a blogger for the Voice for Children website – which has campaigned against child abuse cover ups in Jersey – said that the new laws go too far and could be used to suppress free speech.
