Customs cuts ‘no threat to border safety’

Customs, along with other States department, have had to contend with budget cuts in recent years and have had to implement a strict ‘vacancy management’ scheme.

Between 2014 and last year expenditure by the department fell by about £150,000 and spending on staff wages alone dropped by more than £100,000.

Dave Nurse, head of service for Customs, said that the department had been replacing departing staff internally or not at all to meet new budget requirements.
