Finance firms may have to disclose any Panama links

Deputy Geoff Southern has lodged a proposition calling for the government to do more to protect the Island’s international reputation following the leak of millions of documents from Mossack Fonseca.

He says that he has not been satisfied with the response of Chief Minister Ian Gorst following the implication of two Jersey companies, Credit Suisse Channel Islands Ltd and Coutts & Co Trustees (Jersey) Ltd, in the setting up of shell companies by wealthy individuals around the world. There is no suggestion that either firm acted illegally.

The Deputy wants the States to agree to direct the Jersey Financial Services Commission to request firms to pass on any information connected with dealings with the Panamanian law firm and those that have had dealings would, if the proposition is approved, be asked what internal investigation there has been and what action they are taking.
