Orlando Marcelino de Sousa Goncalves is accused of committing the offence against the woman as she was walking in a group of four people by the junction of Burrard Street and Don Street just after midnight last Saturday night.
During yesterday’s court hearing, Relief Magistrate Sarah Fitz provisionally transferred the case to the Royal Court after deeming it too serious for her jurisdiction.
Mr Goncalves, who was assisted in court by a translator and spoke only to confirm his name, age and address, was granted bail and is due to reappear in the Magistrate’s Court on 22 April.
