Royal Square protest over proposed nursery cuts

The call on social media for people to rally in the square comes as more than 2,200 people have signed online petitions set up to register unhappiness over the changes.

The Education Department last week announced that from September 2017 households with a combined income of £75,000 or more will no longer be entitled to 20 hours per week free care at private nurseries for their children in the year before they start school – currently, the families of all three- and four-year-olds, regardless of household income, are entitled to the free hours under the Nursery Education Fund.

Now parents, prospective parents and others with an interest in the change are being urged to protest against the plans in the Royal Square from noon on Wednesday 6 April, which coincides with an Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel public hearing at which Education Minister Rod Bryans is due to be questioned about the cuts in the States Building.
