Kennel Club of Jersey president Ian Hutchinson said that members had been left so upset after hearing that four dogs had died and others needed treatment after a fire broke out at Jersey Rescue Dogs on the Inner Road that they wanted to do all they could to help.

And at Saturday’s CI Dog of the Year show – the most prestigious in the Channel Islands, involving more than 80 dogs competing in a number of categories – the club raised £600 to help to pay for the treatment of the injured dogs.

At the show, which was attended by the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl, and Lady McColl, the coveted title of Dog of the Year was awarded to Riley (show name Tonkory Xaminer), a six-year-old border collie owned by Jerseyman Chris Cullen, with another Jersey winner in the Puppy of the Year class, which went to Maverick (show name Petranella Jerseyboy at Tironen), an 18-month-old English springer spaniel owned by Neil and Ro Cox.
