Emke Fopma, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, left his post immediately after the Hospital received an anonymous tip-off about the offence, which he had hidden from employers when he applied for his job.

It is not known when Mr Fopma was convicted but it is understood the offence happened abroad.

Today, Health Minister Andrew Green said that he was not currently aware of any patient complaints about Mr Fopma, who worked at the Hospital between October 2007 and last December, adding that following the surgeon’s immediate resignation on 21 December there had been a ‘small increase’ in patient waiting times for orthopaedic surgery and for outpatient appointments, but that this had since been resolved following the appointment of a locum consultant.
