Syvret ‘right’ to voice abuse fears

Speaking at the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry, Mrs Kinnard said that the Senator’s dismissal in September 2007 ‘could have been avoided’ had the States supported his concerns and had there not been a deep division between him and Chief Minister Frank Walker.

Mr Syvret was dismissed from his ministerial role in September 2007 after Mr Walker brought a vote of no confidence against him for his ‘reprehensible behaviour’ and for losing the confidence of his fellow States Members – the Assembly voted in favour of the proposal 35 to 15.

Mrs Kinnard, who served on the Council of Ministers at the same time as Mr Syvret, said that although she did not agree with his ‘aggressive’ and ‘confrontational’ manner, he had a ‘right’ to raise his concerns, and consequently she did not sign a letter calling for his removal and did not take part in the vote.
