Jobless figure is down on last year

According to the States Statistics Unit, the seasonally adjusted figure, which removes fluctuations caused by temporary seasonal work, was 20 fewer than the previous month, 90 fewer than the preceding three months’ average and ten fewer than the same time last year.

However, the non-seasonally adjusted figures have revealed that a total of 1,470 Islanders were registered as unemployed last month, which was 80 more than in December, but 20 fewer than the same period in 2015. It was also well below the peak of 2,050 reached in March 2013.

The increase is likely to have been caused by seasonal workers being laid off after Christmas.
