German bunkers must be preserved to remind us to fight evil and tyranny, says Holocaust survivor

The annual Holocaust Memorial Day, held at the Occupation Gallery in the Maritime Museum, remembers the 21 Jerseymen and women who suffered at the hands of the Nazis in the Second World War.

During the service, which was attended by 120 people, Holocaust survivor Sami Steigmann spoke of the importance of ‘not being a bystander’ – the theme of this year’s service.

Mr Steigmann, who on Tuesday spoke to Hautlieu students about his experiences at Mogilev Podolski Nazi labour camp in the Ukraine, said that there was still a lot of work to be done to rid the world of hatred.

He said that people should come together as one and that it was important not to stereotype people, as it had been a German woman who had saved him from starvation while he was in the camp.

Speaking after the ceremony, Mr Steigmann said: ‘The German bunkers should be preserved, without question. The have to be preserved because if we do not learn from history, history will repeat itself.’
