Lawyers could be consulted over People’s Park to stop new hospital, warns Constable

On Tuesday Mr Crowcroft announced that he had lodged a proposition calling for the park to be left alone amid growing speculation that it is currently the favoured location for a new hospital.

Health Minister Andrew Green and the Council of Ministers have yet to reveal their preferred site for the multi-million-pound building, but the Senator has previously called the park a ‘strong contender’.

Today Mr Crowcroft said: ‘If we get to the point where States propositions, petitions and referendums failed to protect the park and compulsory purchase was being pursued by the States, then yes we would have to instruct our lawyers.’

Marie-Louise Backhurst, a local historian and former president of the Société Jersiaise, has been researching contract deeds relating to the site which, she says, show that the park was created for working-class Islanders and children to escape a growing St Helier.
