‘This doesn’t make any sense’: Objections to new maritime centre

Vicky Boarder, who runs the Fresh Fish Company beneath Mount Bingham, has questioned the States’ latest move to press ahead with new plans for land next door to her business.

Last year she spearheaded a major public campaign against proposals to build 18 flats, a restaurant and a new maritime hub at the site, which is known as Les Galots.

Hundreds of thousands of pounds of public funds were spent on professional, design and consultancy fees, but the scheme was ultimately withdrawn following a public backlash.

However, the Council of Ministers have now pledged funds to help to build a community maritime centre at the site, which would also act as the headquarters of the Island’s Sea Cadets – who promote the development of skills linked to nautical activities.

‘The other question is the fact that this is meant to be a period of austerity. We can’t afford to pay for pensioners’ TV licences, but we can find £1.2 million to pay for this? The whole thing doesn’t make any sense.’
