Around the islands: Guernsey teen launches campaign to fund life-saving ‘miracle drug’

Jonah Gillingham was diagnosed with leukaemia in June 2014 but recovered after undergoing intensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.

However, earlier this year the 17-year-old received the devastating news that he had been struck down with Atypical haemolytic-uremic syndrome – a rare and extremely serious condition which causes blood clots to form in the kidneys.

Guernsey’s Health Department have only agreed to fund a ‘rescue remedy’ treatment for 12-weeks.

The campaign has so far raised £20,000.

Motorist pushes his vehicle off cliff-edge

A GUERNSEY motorist was so frustrated when his van’s engine failed he pushed the vehicle off a cliff.

Jack Le Tissier tipped his Suzuki van over the cliff on the island’s south coast in September, Guernsey’s Magistrate’s Court heard.

When asked by police why he did it, the 20-year-old told said that is ‘seemed like a good idea at the time’.

Church ministers urge politicians to vote against the introduction of same-sex marriage

TWELVE church ministers in Guernsey have written a joint letter to politicians urging them to vote against introducing same-sex marriages.

In the letter, the group say that marriage between a man and a woman ‘is the bedrock of society and is the most stable environment for raising children’.

They have called for the island’s Deputies to throw out proposals for same-sex marriages when they debate the issue next week.
