THE mercury climbed to 25.8°C yesterday – making it the hottest day of the year so far – and the heatwave is expected to continue during next week’s NatWest Island Games.

Islanders took advantage of yesterday’s good weather to have a bit of fun in the sun with families flocking to the beach and enjoying ice creams at Rozel Bay.

And the Jersey Met Office has predicted temperatures will peak at 29°C on Tuesday, with sunny conditions expected for most of the week, albeit with the possibility of thunderstorms.

Current forecasts also indicate that it will reach 24°C on Sunday and Monday and 27°C on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, sports fans will be able to keep up to date with the weather during Games week using specialised social media services that have been launched by Jersey Met Office.

Forecasts focusing on the conditions for specific events will be broadcast on new Twitter accounts and a Facebook page throughout the week by a dedicated team set up for the Games.

The Met Office’s acting principal meteorological officer, John Searson, said: ‘Our preparations began 18 months ago, and our small team developed a plan to ensure everyone has the very latest weather information.

‘By using a dedicated team to look at the events, we will also ensure our day-to-day operational commitments are not affected by any additional work.

‘We have achieved this by limiting staff leave during the period and some of the team have volunteered to work additional hours.’

And if the new reports prove popular, Mr Searson said they could update their existing social media services to include similar features in the future.

The Met Office will also be distributing six-day forecasts to visiting teams, venues and organisers every day during Games week.

Events such as windsurfing and sailing will receive live rain and wind data using specialised equipment, and general forecasts will be available at venues along with daily UV index updates for spectators.

Jersey 2015 Games director Steve Bailey said: ‘Detailed forecasts and data are essential for organisers and competitors and this is where the contribution of Jersey Met will be invaluable.

‘We hope that we’ll have settled conditions, so that everything can proceed as planned.’
