Roman ship’s timbers head for home port in Guernsey

And on Wednesday the Jersey Museum shipped a further two timbers that have been on display for the last year to join those that were sent from the trust’s headquarters.

The remains of the vessel were found by a Guernsey diver on Christmas Day 1983 and were later recovered and sent to the UK for restoration. And now that all the pieces are together, shipwreck researcher John Ovenden has said that it is an excellent opportunity for Channel Islanders to see one of the largest and most intact vessels ever found from the Roman period.

Guernsey Museum workers are currently unwrapping and recording the pieces at an old post office building because the museum is not large enough to hold the 17-metre timbers. It is hoped that the timbers will soon be moved to a different location to be exhibited.
