Mystery of ‘collision at sea’

In the recording, which was generally fuzzy and of poor quality, the caller claimed that a vessel containing more than 20 people had hit an object. No name of the vessel was given and very little else was audible except for the word ‘Jersey’.

A search and rescue operation involving the St Catherine lifeboat and both St Helier lifeboats was launched, with the vessels scouring Jersey’s coast and inshore waters and extending as far as Sark. But after an extensive search nothing was found and the operation was eventually called off.
