Top test for Island team

ENGLAND’S representatives in the UEFA Regions Cup are to play a football match against a Jersey XI later this month.

National League Systems Cup winners the Southern Amateur League will play Jersey at Springfield on Saturday 27 September, just a few weeks before they begin their UEFA Regions Cup campaign in Turin in Italy in a group against teams from Italy, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

The Southern Amateur League side travel billed as an amateur England XI and Paul Creeden, chief executive officer of the JFA, is thrilled to have secured the fixture.

Creeden said: ‘It’s a game which has come as a result of a chance conversation made by JFA president Ricky Weir and myself at a meeting at FA headquarters in Soho Square last month.

‘The FA wanted a friendly for the Souther Amateur League and they could have gone anywhere in Europe but they have now decided to come to Jersey. We were in the right place at the right time and we are thoroughly delighted to now be hosting this game.’

Securing a good result in the fixture could have wider reaching implications for Jersey and their search for international opportunities.
