Football:Red card blow to Trinity title chances

Trinity, who still trail champions Jersey Scottish by six points but now with only one game in hand, made things difficult for themselves when Island utility player Jon Fitzmaurice was sent off inside the opening ten minutes.

Despite that Trinity took the lead and although they competed well to get back to 2-2 after trailing 2-1 they were eventually well beaten by Jon Trigg’s side.

Trinity joint-manager Adam Reid said: ‘Jon was sent off for reacting to a challenge and the team and the club have paid the penalty.

‘We tell the players before every game that we can afford no slips ups and a player with Jon’s experience should have known better.

‘We had started the game brightly and caused St Peter a few problems.

We did really well to be leading at the break and we had to be forcussed for the second period.

‘Unfortunately we made a couple of errors to go behind but we did well to get level again despite our second being an own goal.

‘St Peter took full advantage in the end to win; overall we’ve given Jersey Scottish an early Christmas present but we’ll roll our sleeves up again this week and look to get back to winning ways again on Saturday at St Paul’s.’ St Peter manager Jon Trigg said: ‘The early dismissal was a boost to us and we were able to capitalise with a very good second half performance.

‘I think it was our best 45 minutes of the season and we achieved it with a number of very good individual performances.’ Luke Watson fired Trinity ahead only for Peter Vincenti to equalise when he followed up Bradley Vowden’s half-volley that was parried by goalkeeper Jimmy Styles.

Marco Vieira rounded Styles to put the Saints ahead only for Trinity to level when Saints defender Lucas Parker nodded Danny Craven’s cross into his own goal.

Matt Swinburne nodded St Peter 3-2 ahead and then Vincenti hit his second from the penalty spot after Vieira had been tripped.

Ryan Durrand completed the scoring with a good finish after he was left with time and space.
