GALLERY: Dragon boat racers raise thousands for Jersey Hospice

The annual Dragon Boat Race drew hundreds of spectators who watched 45 crews – many of whom were dressed in fancy dress – cut across calm waters under blue skies.

This year Freedom Floaters claimed the title after winning a final in which nine boats – including last year’s winners Jersey Water Polo Club – competed.

It is the 18th time that teams from across the Island have come together to take part in the charity event, which raises money for Jersey Hospice Care.

Event organiser and community event fundraiser for Jersey Hospice Care Linzi Duckworth said that it was an ‘amazing day’ and that she hoped the final fundraising total would rise above £60,000.

‘We had a real carnival atmosphere,’ she said.

‘There were teams dressed as pirates, clowns and all sorts of other colourful costumes.

‘It was perfect weather as it was not only beautifully sunny but there was little wind.

‘People of all ages came down to watch which was great to see and I am hopeful that we have raised more money than last year.’
