Hundreds of Islanders will be taking part in a race this weekend to raise money for charity whilst honouring those affected by cancer.
Jersey’s Race for Life is taking place this Sunday 25th May at Les Jardins de la Mer in St Helier at 11am to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
The annual race which takes places all across the UK will see participants honouring those affected by cancer by displaying their names across their t-shirt.
Since launching in 1994, over 10 million people have taken part in the Race for Life across the UK and raised over £970m for life-saving treatments.
The money for the charity goes towards funding research, enabling scientists to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer – helping to save more lives.
Cancer Research UK Jersey, is the local fundraising committee for the charity.
Southampton is the primary care and treatment facility for many Islanders diagnosed with cancer, therefore the money raised through Jersey goes towards the Southampton Cancer Research Centre.
The close relationship between the comittee and Southampton ensures the funds donated will go directly towards helping Islanders affected by cancer.
This includes funding clinical trials which are accessible to local patients as there is no research environment in Jersey.
Event organisers say: “This event is more than just a race, it’s a celebration of life, strength, and community spirit.”
Islanders are encouraged to get involved by walking, skipping or running, with all abilities catered for with various races available including 3k, 5k and 10k.
Kira Scott Warren took part in the Race for Life in 2024 to support for her Nana.
She said: “It was a lovely day with a great atmosphere, celebrating those who are on a cancer journey and how far they’ve come, but also an opportunity to remember and honour those we have lost to the disease.”
There’s still time to get involved. To enter, visit raceforlife.org and select Jersey from the drop-down list.
