DELEGATES from 13 French-speaking jurisdictions have been in Jersey this week for a conference aimed at “fostering connections”.

The event, which took place from Sunday 18 to Tuesday 20 May, was hosted by Jersey as part of its membership of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF), an international body representing French-speaking countries.

Discussions were held in the States Chamber, with 29 delegates attending and a cultural visit planned for the final day.

Deputy Montfort Tadier, President of the Jersey Branch of the APF, said: “Our links to France are an important part of Jersey’s rich cultural history and identity.

“We are reminded of our close ties with France on a daily basis in our road names and our deep-rooted connection to our nearest neighbours should not be diminished.

“The APF is an important organisation in bringing together French-speaking parliamentarians to share knowledge and common approaches to the challenges we all face.

“Jersey’s membership also raises awareness of our Island on the international stage.

“We are delighted to welcome our Francophonie friends to Jersey to further foster those connections.”

During the conference, Deputy Tadier spoke about the status of French in Jersey, while Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel – who is Vice-President of the Jersey Branch – addressed delegates about the role of young adults in driving economic prosperity.

There were also be speeches from the Directrices of the Alliance Française and the Maison de la Normandie et de la Manche, and a visiting speaker on the co-operation between the EU and UK in defence matters.
