Registration mark J74 – which was attached to a 2007 Peugeot 107 – sold for £101,000 at the Glencoe weekly auction in St Lawrence on Wednesday, making it the second most expensive two-digit plate sold at auction in the Island. Another two-digit registration mark sold in October last year for £103,000.
Auctioneer Simon Drieu said that number plates were currently being sold on a regular basis for ‘very good money’, and that he had not been surprised by J74’s final bidding price. ‘The bidding opened in the room at £71,000 and quickly rose to the hammer price of £101,000, with three bidders in the room and another three bidding live online,’ he said.
It was estimated that the plate would be sold for around £85,000, which Mr Drieu said was not an unusual figure for a two-digit mark.
‘We have seen a marked increase in all “cherished” number plates following the sale of J4 for £380,000 last autumn, with four-digit numbers regularly achieving £4,000-plus and three-digits achieving £28,000 to £30,000.’
