Chairman Edward Trevor said that the TMF Group Island Walk – which had to be rescheduled last year due to Covid-19 – would ‘press ahead as normal’ on 19 June after it was revealed last week that Islanders are set to be able to attend nightclubs, theatres, live-music concerts and other large events from 14 June.
The annual event began in 1991, and has raised over £2.4 million for local charities.
‘We’re hoping that it will go ahead exactly as before,’ said Mr Trevor.
‘The one possible difference is that the breakfast stop at St Catherine may all be pre-wrapped cold food rather than hot food purely because we’ve made those arrangements just in case – but generally it will be organised exactly as before.’
He added that the event – which allows Islanders to take on a 48.1-mile walk, as well as a relay and a smaller 13-mile route called the Lieutenant-Governor’s Challenge – could be smaller this year depending on whether visitors from the UK would be able to come over and take part. Organisers are awaiting further clarity on border restrictions which are expected to be issued either later this week or early next. Event bosses have also been discussing the possibility of UK participants completing the walk virtually using an activity tracking app.
‘What we are trying to do is raise money for charity,’ said Mr Trevor. ‘If we can get the people who would normally come over to raise money then we will try and do so but we are trying to work out the mechanics of it.’
Additionally, the deadline for Islanders to use the ‘early bird’ discount – which offers a reduced entry fee – has been extended to 21 March.
