WATCH: Squirrel takes a short-cut through reservoir tunnel

And the same can be said for a certain bushy-tailed Queen’s Valley resident who has been caught racing through the reservoir’s 175 foot-long dam – scaling hundreds of steps in the process.

Footage of the speedy squirrel making the journey was recorded last weekend by Simon Le Huray, customer service manager for Jersey Water, and it has now been viewed on Facebook over 3,700 times.

Explaining what happened, he said: ‘We had an open day on Saturday that we have for charity once a year.

‘We had some visitors waiting to come in at the top of the tunnel when the engineer called in on his radio that a squirrel had got in and he called down to where we were to walk up and chase it back up,’ he said.

‘All of a sudden, I could see him coming towards me and I thought he would stop and go the other way but he did not – he just whizzed straight past me.’

Mr Le Huray added that there were 174 steps on either side of the tunnel, meaning that the mammal would have had to scale 348 steps to complete its journey.

‘It looked like he or she knew exactly where they were going. It is completely empty in there – there is no food or anything like that,’ he said.

‘There are railings there and rats and mice cannot get in but we think a squirrel could probably get over the top and that it could probably be a regular occurrence and we are now thinking about
putting movement-activated cameras in there.’

Around 100 people attended the open day and £1,320 was raised for the Special Care Baby Unit.
