Operational review secures Maison des Landes’ future

Maison des Landes at St Ouen has been catering for elderly visitors, and those with disabilities, since 1967, when it was set up as a charitable trust by the Lions Club of Jersey.

Trustees of the hotel initiated a review of operations following a number of disappointing years, and this has led to an upturn during the past three summer seasons.

Bob Gaiger, one of the trustees, said it had been accepted that the hotel needed to perform better in order to remain viable.

‘The decision was taken ahead of the 2017 season to reduce the length of the season in order to cut our outgoings,’ he said. ‘By delaying the start of the season until early May, and closing in early October, the hotel has been able to achieve the necessary reduction in costs without compromising on the service provided to guests.’

The majority of guests come to Jersey from the UK, but Mr Gaiger said there had been an increase in visitors from continental Europe, including a group of 22 from Holland earlier this month.

‘We’ve been making greater use of tour operators, some of whom have international connections which may have meant more people in Europe becoming aware of Maison des Landes,’ he said.

The hotel also offers free one-week breaks to Islanders who might otherwise be unlikely to take a holiday owing to old age, ill-health or disability.

The offer for residents is restricted to periods when the hotel is less than fully booked, with availability currently for the weeks of 17 August, 24 August and 28 September.
