A 15-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of grave and criminal assault in connection with the incident at Grands Vaux on Tuesday remains on police bail.

The young victim suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Jersey’s General Hospital by his mother following the incident near Grands Vaux on Tuesday afternoon.

He was later transferred to Southampton for ‘urgent medical care’. On Thursday afternoon he was said to be in a stable condition.

Violent offences among young people in the Island have been widely reported in recent weeks. Officers are still investigating a brawl, involving and witnessed by up to 40 young people, in Howard Davis Park. And on the same weekend, a father of two young children told this newspaper how he had to intervene when a gang of young boys attacked and pummelled two teenagers at FB Fields.

The States police said this incident ‘isn’t related to the recent fights covered in the media’.

A spokeswoman added: ‘The circumstances surrounding this particular incident are not similar in any way’.

In relation to the Grands Vaux incident, officers say the 17-year-old suffered serious head injuries during a ‘fight’ which took place between 2pm and 3pm in the area of Whitely Close and Sutton Court in Grands Vaux. It is understood that both of those involved are known to each other.

The force added in a statement: ‘The police urgently want to speak to anyone who saw the incident or who may have information that could assist with this inquiry.’

Responding to questions from the JEP, a spokeswoman said: ‘We believe a metal baseball bat was used in this assault. We have conducted house-to-house inquiries and spoken to numerous people in the area. However, we would appeal for anyone who saw this assault to come forward with any information that they have.

The spokeswoman said they were not aware of any video footage at this stage, ‘however, we would appeal for anyone with private CCTV on their premises in that area or anyone with dash-cam footage to get in contact with us.’.

Anyone wit information is asked to contact the States police Serious Crime Unit on 612200 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or via their anonymous online form at Crimestoppers-uk.org.

Meanwhile a JustGiving page set up to support the mother of the injured boy has raised almost £200.
