Sacked eye surgeon wins case against the States

Dr Amar Alwitry was raised in Jersey but was living in the UK in 2012 when he was offered at job in the Island. But his contract was terminated before he started work.

He has always maintained that this was because he had raised concerns about patient safety relating to his work schedule.

Dr Alwitry went on to lodge a formal complaint against the SEB.

The SEB claimed that the withdrawn offer related to a ‘breakdown’ in the relationship between Dr Alwitry and senior managers.

But in a judgment delivered in the Royal Court on Wednesday, Commissioner Julian Clyde-Smith said that the court had found in favour of Dr Alwitry.

He is now due to be awarded damages, the court heard.
