Bob Marie, who was well-known for taking pupils from Mont à l’Abbé School on ‘fun runs’ to St Malo, passed away last month at the age of 82.
On Friday, a funeral procession of Mr Marie’s former colleagues drove from the Airport and past taxi ranks in town before ending at the Crematorium.
And festive decorations were placed inside the hearse to pay tribute to the fact that every year Mr Marie would transform his car into a Christmas cab to help get Islanders and customers in the Yuletide spirit.
Mr Marie, who was made an MBE in 1998 for his charity work, retired in 2015 after 55 years behind the wheel. The great-grandfather, who was married to Madeline for 63 years, passed away on 27 October. His family have asked for donations in his memory to be sent to Mont à l’Abbé School.
Head teacher Liz Searle said: ‘Bob Marie organised many taxi fun runs for pupils at Mont à l’Abbé School. The pupils always had a lovely day out and I’m sure that many of our ex-pupils have happy memories of these events.
‘We are very grateful to the family of Mr Marie for choosing Mont à l’Abbé School to receive donations in his memory.
‘Any donations will be used in Mr Marie’s memory to provide extra activities or outings for the pupils, reminiscent of the taxi fun runs of years gone by.’
