Ibrahim Abdullah Roslan was jailed for four years by the Superior Number of the Royal Court after pleading guilty to two driving offences and two drugs charges.
On the evening of 12 October, Roslan left his partner terrified as he sped through a small lane in St Clement in slippery conditions, before crashing and writing off his white Audi.
In a statement, Roslan’s partner said that he was ‘driving fast with just one hand on the wheel’ and she had to grab hold of her seat because she was so frightened.
A member of the public who discovered the vehicle lying on its roof reported it to the police, despite Roslan begging her not to, the court heard. The witness said that she felt ‘scared and intimidated’ by the defendant’s behaviour.
Police officers found 1.57 grammes of cocaine in Roslan’s wallet in the car.
After being released by the police Roslan left the Island before flying back to Jersey days later following a cocaine-fuelled ‘blow-out’ in his home city of Liverpool.
He was stopped by Customs officers after swab tests detected traces of cocaine. While in custody an officer noticed him trying to remove a condom-wrapped package from his crotch, which contained the drugs.
He was found in possession of almost 14 grammes of the class A drug with an estimated street value of up to £9,500.
Crown Advocate Conrad Yates, prosecuting, called for Roslan to be jailed for four years, noting he had been dishonest about his driving experience during police interview.
‘The defendant passed his Jersey driving licence in 2016,’ he said.
‘He had told police that he had been driving for eight years prior to the incident. He had in fact been driving illegally for eight years.’
He added that Roslan, who admitted possessing cocaine, careless driving, failing to stop and report an accident and importing cocaine, was previously sentenced to three and a half years in prison for importing drugs into the Island in 2015.
Advocate Lucy Marks, defending, called for a lesser sentence to be imposed, saying that Roslan was stressed after losing his job following the car accident and regretted what he had done.
‘He would like to apologise to the court and everyone for his actions,’ she said.
She called for him to instead be jailed for three years and three months.
Commissioner Julian Clyde-Smith, presiding, said that the court agreed with the Crown’s sentencing recommendations.
He said the defendant’s driving had left his partner ‘terrified’. He added: ‘Its clear that this case could have been more serious. The car was written off.
‘The defendant could have seriously injured the passenger or himself.’
