Jersey to be hit by two ex-hurricanes

Lee – currently a category two hurricane out in the mid-Atlantic – is due to sweep across central parts of the UK on Sunday, bringing gale force eight winds to Jersey.

It will be closely followed by the remnants of Maria, which at its peak was a category five hurricane that devastated large parts of the Caribbean, but has since weakened to a tropical storm. It is now sitting off the east coast of the USA.

Neither storm will be anywhere near hurricane status when they hit the UK, and will instead arrive as powerful areas of low pressure.

However, they are still expected to bring wet and windy weather, with swells of up to ten feet.

Jersey Met forecaster Peter Munns said there was still uncertainty over the progress of both storms but added: ‘Ex-hurricanes Lee and Maria are expected to move from the eastern seaboard of America and track across the Atlantic.

‘They will become subsumed into mid-latitude depressions and move across the UK.

‘We are expecting Lee to produce gale-force winds. Maria could give us even windier weather, but it is too early to say for sure.’

As the storms will contain mild and moist air which originated in the tropics, they are expected to introduce mist and low cloud.
