Dr Kirsty Swinnerton, who is based in Puerto Rico, was undertaking wildlife surveys along the north coast as part of the Birds on the Edge programme. The project is a joint initiative between the National Trust for Jersey, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Environment Department to protect endangered bird species on the coast and farmland. She has previously worked with Durrell in Mauritius.
Dr Swinnerton’s specialism is combating invasive predators that prey on birds, their chicks and eggs. Puffin numbers are declining, partly due to the falling numbers of sand eels in local waters.
