Manchester City’s hopes of signing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal and West Brom defender Jonny Evans are over.

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley rejected a move to champions Chelsea with the future of Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez still unresolved.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was the first major piece of business done, completing his transfer from Arsenal to Liverpool around midday.

Shortly after that, Tottenham strengthened their squad by signing Paris St Germain full-back Serge Aurier.

Late in the day, Fernando Llorente arrived at White Hart Lane from Swansea, who brought Wilfried Bony back to the Liberty Stadium from Manchester City.

Chelsea, meanwhile, signed Davide Zappacosta from Torino and were hopeful of landing Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater.

The 27-year-old flew to France on Wednesday and passed a medical with the Ligue 1 side – even though the Hammers had not agreed to sell the Senegal international.

Press Association Sport understands Spurs will pay around £23million for Aurier, who has agreed a five-year contract at White Hart Lane.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is currently on international duty, underwent a medical at England’s St George’s Park training base after agreeing terms with the Reds.
