THE Constable of Grouville has declared his ambition to be elected for a second term in the eastern parish.
Constable Mark Labey has held the role for the past four years after defeating rival candidate Sarah Howard by 975 votes to 903 in June 2022.
Having earned the nickname “the singing postman” as a result of demonstrating his vocal prowess while delivering mail to households and businesses, Mr Labey said he did not yet feel ready to leave the stage in his home parish.
“There’s a lot going on in Grouville at present and I want to see these things through, rather than hand them over,” he said, citing the parish’s forthcoming takeover of the Sandy Park play area at Long Beach as one of his top priorities.
Mr Labey is currently honorary treasurer of the Grouville Battle of Flowers Association.
While much of his attention has been focused on parish matters, Mr Labey said he had relished some of the Island-wide responsibilities he had taken on.
“I’ve been a member of the Children, Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel for the whole term and we have carried out some important work, particularly related to preventing online harms,” he said. “And I’ve really enjoyed my time on the Planning Committee for the past two years, even if it is a bit of a political hot potato.”
The incumbent Constable said he did not yet know whether he would face a contested election on 7 June.
“I have heard rumours about various people putting themselves forward for different roles, but nothing definite here so far,” he said.
