THERE are some places that make a good first impression. Then there are places that make you start mentally planning future birthdays, holidays, family gatherings and, in my case, a wedding that doesn’t currently exist. Château de Vézins falls firmly into the second category.
My boyfriend, Josh, and I recently spent a long weekend at the Loire Valley estate and, despite neither of us having driven in France before, getting there proved remarkably straightforward.
The journey took just three hours from St Malo, along near-empty roads winding through picturesque French countryside, and before long we were pulling through the gates of a château that looked as though it had stepped straight from the pages of a historical romance novel.

The 18th-century château has been lovingly restored and is available exclusively for private hire, making it quite different from a traditional hotel experience.
Rather than sharing facilities with other guests, visitors have complete use of the property, whether they’re gathering with extended family, hosting a retreat, celebrating a milestone birthday or planning a wedding. It’s easy to see why the exclusive-use concept has become such a draw.
Our welcome set the tone immediately. Housekeeper Lillemor greeted us like old friends with a guided tour, and could not have been more helpful throughout our stay.
After our journey, finding the kitchen stocked with essentials including butter, a fresh baguette and a bottle of local wine felt like arriving at the holiday home of a generous relative rather than a relative stranger.

That feeling continued throughout the weekend.
While the château undoubtedly delivers luxury, it never feels intimidating. Instead, it has the warmth and comfort that makes guests instantly relax.
The kitchen is fully equipped and genuinely practical rather than simply decorative. We found ourselves cooking leisurely breakfasts and planning dinners as though we lived there.
There was something wonderfully indulgent about preparing meals surrounded by centuries of history while looking out across immaculate manicured gardens.
Once you’ve cooked, there is no shortage of places to eat – whether you want to snack by the pool, sip coffee by the moat, dine under the canopy, or eat inside the grand historic dining room.
The interiors strike a clever balance between grandeur and comfort. Every room feels thoughtfully designed, retaining the property’s historic character while incorporating modern touches where needed.

We thoroughly enjoyed browsing the family photo album near the entrance, which showed every step of the impressive restoration project they had undertaken.
The bedrooms at Château de Vézins deserve special mention. Soaring ceilings, elegant furnishings, luxurious linens and enormous windows framing views of the landscaped gardens create spaces that would not look out of place on the set of Bridgerton.
We had the place almost entirely to ourselves, so naturally chose an ensuite bedroom. Our bathroom was equally impressive with a freestanding bath that looked straight out of a spa advert and carefully chosen finishes.
Compared to a hotel, where you want to get up and get out as soon as possible, I found myself lingering far longer than necessary in the bedrooms simply because they were such a pleasure to spend time in.

The true star of the show was Louie – the château’s resident peacock and undisputed king of the estate. We were told he had two girlfriends somewhere on the grounds, although they were nesting during our stay and wisely left him to his solo duties.
Louie, however, was impossible to miss. At first, I was slightly hesitant about sharing the grounds with a free-roaming peacock, but he quickly became one of my favourite parts of the weekend.
He spent much of his time admiring himself in windows, patio doors and even car mirrors, often pecking and knocking on the glass as if demanding appreciation from his audience.
His daily inspections of the château became part of the rhythm of our stay, and I grew surprisingly fond of waking up to the sound of his distinctive call drifting across the grounds each morning. There was something oddly reassuring about knowing he was out there, keeping watch over his kingdom.

In a place already overflowing with character and grandeur, Louie managed to elevate the experience even further. By the time we left, he felt less like a resident peacock and more like an eccentric host. We have been showing people videos of him ever since.
Outside, the château’s grounds provide plenty of reasons not to leave. Manicured gardens invite strolls with a morning coffee, while the swimming pool, hot tub and sauna offer every excuse to slow down and embrace the gentler pace of rural France.
There is also a yoga studio – kitted out with a ballet barre, aerial equipment, and pole dancing poles – as well as a sauna, massage bed and gym, making the property particularly well suited to wellness retreats and corporate getaways as well as family holidays.
We didn’t have enough time during our short stay to venture far beyond the estate, but we were more than happy to relax and soak up the tranquillity and atmosphere of the château.

For those who do want to venture out, the château is perfectly positioned for exploring the Loire Valley. Local vineyards, charming villages and historic attractions are all within easy reach, while destinations such as Cholet and the renowned Puy du Fou provide options for day trips.
That flexibility ultimately sums up Château de Vézins. You can fill your days exploring the Loire Valley or happily spend an entire weekend without leaving the grounds, and neither approach feels like a compromise.
Perhaps what impressed me most was how adaptable the property feels. It works equally well as a romantic escape, a multi-generational family gathering, a corporate retreat or a wedding venue.

And speaking of weddings, I should probably apologise to Josh as I spent an alarming amount of the weekend mentally planning a future ceremony there. Between the sweeping staircases, elegant reception rooms, immaculate grounds and unmistakable fairytale setting, Château de Vézins feels purpose-built for memorable celebrations.
If there is a more romantic venue within easy driving distance of the Channel Islands, I would very much like to hear about it.
That accessibility is what makes the château particularly appealing for Jersey residents.
Islanders often look much further afield for luxury escapes, yet here is a destination that delivers all the elegance, privacy and sense of occasion of a much longer journey while remaining comfortably reachable from St Malo.
By the time we left, we understood exactly why guests return. Château de Vézins offers something increasingly rare: the opportunity to genuinely switch off.
Whether gathered around the dining table with family, enjoying a glass of wine by the pool, or simply soaking up the atmosphere of a remarkable historic home, it encourages guests to slow down and enjoy being together.
