THE Channel Island surfing team are Newquay-bound for the British Cup this weekend in Fistral.

Open to men and women, as well as U18 boys and girls, the reward is the chance of gaining a spot in the GB British Team squad.

Jersey dominate the CI team with 11 of the 12 surfers competing.

Leading their pursuit of glory is the highly experienced and respected Roley McMichael, who has been associated with Jersey Surfing since 2009.

He said: “Myself and the team are really looking forward to competing in the British Championships.

“The majority of the side won’t have tasted a tournament like this before so it will be exciting for them. At the moment it’s all about experience.

“We have a generally young team, led by captain Josh Evans, and compete against a good level of experienced surfers from the other nations.

“The event will be a great test for them. They will take a lot away from the opportunity.”

Jersey have a strong history in the British Cup, with previous competitor Nathan Elms making his mark.

McMichael added: “We have historically done well in this event, with previous success from the likes of Nathan finishing third and qualifying for the GB team for the world championships.

“We are hopeful a few members of this team will be really competitive over the weekend and I can’t wait to see what they can bring.”

The team is comprised mainly of juniors, with the likes of Owen Graham, Anders Ravenscroft, Ollie Gould and all of the female surfers in the team will all be competing in both the under-18 and Open divisions.

Graham, Ravenscroft, Gould and Read are currently in Portugal with CI Surfing Federation junior head coach Jake Powell undergoing training ahead of the coming weekend.

The annual competition takes place between each of the home nations that make up British Surfing.

These comprise the Channel Islands Surfing Federation, Surfing England, the Welsh Surfing Federation and the Scottish Surfing Federation.

Each home nation hosts the British Cup on a rota basis and the ultimate winner is crowned the British Champion.
