Hobie racers cope with variable winds

Lake Garda provided a stunning location for Jersey's young sailors competing at the Hobie European Championships

JERSEY’S Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club’s Hobie 16 Youth teams have returned from Lake Garda after a fruitful Hobie European Championships.

The four days of racing saw varied conditions from a zephyr to 25-30kt on occasion.

With the lake’s stunning mountain backdrop, Jersey’s young sailors were tested to their limits.

High winds and 47 boats on the start line meant for a hectic beginning as the teams jockeyed for good positions.

The Caesarean teams acquitted themselves well against the top level of European youth competition.

Luke Garnier and Steph Egan excelled in the wildly changeable conditions.

Despite a couple of high-scoring races, they managed to end day three in an incredible third place.

The young pair sustained their good form in the final few races posting third, fourth and eighth-place finishes.

Their slew of fantastic results landed them a respectable sixth overall.

Kai Surcouf, crewed by Liv Forbes, also sailed into some good positions to finish 9th overall.

Elsewhere, While Juliette Walton and her brother, Russell finished two places behind them in the 11th position.

The Islanders acquitted themselves well in an impressive field, managing to secure several top-three finishes across the races.

The memories and experience gained are sure to stand our budding sailors in good stead moving forward.

There were amazing results all around for the youth teams, with several top three finishes.

The H16 Open qualifiers are now underway, with the Silver and Gold Fleet finals, as Jersey teams are involved in both competitions.
