LESS than 24 hours after their 2-2 draw retained the U16 inter-insular crown, the Jersey girls were back in action, playing their latest knockout fixture in the England Hockey U16 Tier 2 Cup away at Surbiton and securing a stunning 7-0 victory.
In wet and windy conditions, Jersey took the game to the hosts from the whistle.
Young superstar and goalscorer against Guernsey, Anais McDermott, was in dazzling form once again, narrowly denied by the post within the first two minutes.
Jersey were not to be thwarted for long though and McDermott finished expertly to open the scoring.
Utilising their superior pace and the space left behind by a very high Surbiton back line, Jersey creating several chances with Tallulah Spry eventually scoring Jersey’s second goal after a typically mesmerising dribble.
With a 2-0 lead at half-time, the Caesareans were mindful of not relinquishing the lead for a second game running.
As expected, Surbiton came out strong but Jersey’s defence, expertly marshalled by Kate Follain and some brilliant tackles from captain Molly McKeon, repeatedly managed to set their attackers away on the counter.
Eventually the floodgates opened and Jersey took full advantage.
A succession of penalty corners and attacking pressure led to well taken goals from Poppy Hughes and Lucy Kirby, alongside McDermott who added her second of the match.
Jersey were dominant now and, with ruthless intent, their best two goals were still to come.
McDermott deservedly scored her hat trick with an excellent finish, following a textbook sweeping team move involving four perfect passes from defence to attack in the blink of an eye.
With the game well and truly won, McKeon was given licence to step further forward and deservedly rounded off the scoring with an outstanding solo goal.
Jersey used their full squad of 15 players to great effect, with all the girls contributing to a very impressive away win.
Elsewhere in local hockey, women’s action continued on Sunday, starting with a thumping 4-0 win for Walkers Eagles over the Puffins in the Ladies’ Minor Cup.
Mitchell Jerrard scored twice, with Jaxon Reddington and Freya Satchell also on target.
The Minor Cup provided another emphatic scoreline, as Nomads 2nd XI and Walkers Falcons shared the points in a thrilling 4-4 draw.
Issabella Frost (2), Harley Little and Amelie Hern’s goals for Nomads were equalled by Rafi Hern (2), Lex Helmholt-Kneisel and Arthur Powell for Falcons.
In the Ladies’ Senior Cup, JLHC’s 1s went one better, beating Quackers 1st XI 5-1.
An Emma Bower brace, with Sarah Jenkins, Emily Watson and Olive Smith all netting, sealed the win.
Lucinda Gouveia grabbed the lone Quackers goal.
In the Men’s Senior Cup, the sole game to go ahead saw the school rivalry of Hautlieu and Victoria College’s 1st XI’s meet, with College coming out victorious *5-2.
