NO fewer than five Jersey Women’s Cricket stars have been selected to represent the British and Irish Roses at the inaugural Meltl Shield in Rome.

Hosted by the European Cricket Network, Jersey captain Chloe Greechan, Analise Merritt, Charlie Miles, Trinity Smith and Grace Wetherall have all been chosen to take on Team Europe this weekend, off the back of standout displays in T10 and T20 cricket with the national side.

The quintet will travel along with Jersey Cricket’s chief executive Sarah Gomersall, who has been appointed manager for the showcase event.

Jersey Women’s head coach, Darren Thomas, said: “This is a great chance for our players to show off their skills in a franchise-type environment amongst a team of high quality players and facing a European team with many familiar names.

“Up to now there hasn’t been many opportunities to play with cricketers of this calibre, with players from England, Ireland, Guernsey and Gibraltar all represented.

“It shows the progress of women’s cricket in Jersey that we have five cricketers in the Roses squad and they can all be proud of their places.”

Held at the Italy’s Roma Cricket Ground, the T10 tournament will consist of nine matches, between a selection of the best women’s cricketers across the continent.

Manuela Meltl-Weston, wife of Daniel Weston, founder of European Cricket Network, said: “Myself and my family are so excited to see the game growing further and faster.

“Not only am I proud to have my surname on the shield but more importantly to create platforms for the best female cricketers of today and drive the ambition of tomorrow.”

All matches will be televised on the European Cricket Network’s YouTube channel, with live scoring also available via ecn.cricket/series/meltl-shield-2024-6955
