JERSEY have a steep upward task if they wish to qualify for the 2024 T20I World Cup, following at 25-run defeat to Italy in their Europe Region Qualifier.

The Caesareans had never previously lost a T20I match against the Italians, however their first, coupled with defeat to hosts Scotland, has left qualification an unlikely prospect.

Jersey’s opponents were put into bat first at Goldenacre and looked inspired throughout the innings to set a stout target of 183 for Neil MacRae’s side to chase.

Unfortunately, after a tight powerplay from the Italians, the Islanders were always behind the rate, and that pressure to score eventually took its toll.

They were reduced to 158 all out, as Elliot Miles was dismissed with the final ball of the innings.

Despite the defeat, MacRae was keen to hold onto the positives, ahead of a crunch game against Ireland today.

He said: ‘First and foremost, I think Italy deserve a lot of credit.

‘They are a good outfit with three county players in the shape of Berg, Stewart and Madsen and they all made very important contributions.

‘We are obviously disappointed with the loss, but there was a lot of good performances in there.

‘I don’t think the 25-run margin does us justice, it was a much tighter game than that.

‘We would have liked to have scored more strongly in the powerplay, but Asa [Tribe] and Nick [Greenwood] fought well and put us in position halfway through the innings.

‘Unfortunately, Italy grabbed wickets at crucial times, which broke up valuable partnerships and eventually secured the game.’

Should Jersey seal victory over Ireland today, it would be the highest ranked opponent the Caesareans have ever beaten, as they currently sit in 12th.

Given the intense nature of tournament cricket, the fledgling side have little time to dwell on defeats.

‘We need to look at the game against Ireland as a big opportunity,’ said MacRae.

‘They would be the biggest win of our history and chances like that are exciting and something we strive for.

‘The loss against Italy didn’t stem from lack of commitment or effort. Our guys have that in abundance.

‘We will now shift our focus and attention to the next game and fight as hard as possible to stay in this tournament.’

Jersey won the toss, and decided to send their opponents into bat and rely on their ability to chase down totals with a strong batting attack.

The Italians had lost their only game thus far, against a strong Ireland team.

However, it was a close-run affair and, as Jersey fully know, Italy possess the talent to upset top sides.

It was a strong start from Jersey’s opponents as both openers took full advantage of the powerplay to accelerate the run rate.

The Caesareans were in desperate need of wickets and they found a pair of them in the ninth over through Ben Ward.

He first cleaned up Benjamin Manenti, who fell for 22, before Justin Mosca followed by way of a Julius Sumerauer catch with the last ball of the over.

Mosca walked on 49, just one short of a maiden T20I half-century.

Despite the quick wickets, Wayne Madsen, batting three, continued where the openers had left off, racing to a quick 52 from 30 balls, before Jonty Jenner took a wonderful catch on the boundary off Ward’s bowling.

Elsewhere lower down the order, captain Chuggy Perchard took two wickets in as many balls as the Caesareans looked to halt the Azzurri’s progress.

Anthony Mosca was caught by Charlie Brennan, before Grant Stewart played onto his stumps for a first-ball duck.

Marcus Campopiano entered the fray and re-established Italy’s momentum, firing 44 from 22 deliveries, to lift his side to a imposing total of 183/8 from their 20 overs.

It was a very valuable contribution as there was little assistance from those around.

Harry Manenti was cleaned up by Elliot Miles, before Asa Tribe’s wonderful work from behind the stumps ran out Gian-Piero Meade for a duck.

Both Ward and Perchard finished with three wickets apiece, but, like many of the Jersey attack, were expensive in doing so, giving away 9.5 and 9.75 per over respectively.

There was plenty of pressure on Jersey’s openers to take advantage of the powerplay early.

However, both Harrison Carlyon (14) and Sumerauer (9) fell within the first four overs.

There was renewed hope for Jersey through Nick Greenwood (32) and Tribe (24), who gave the Azzurri some problems, but they were both caught in the space of an over as momentum tilted back in their opponents’ favour.

Jonty Jenner and Ward offered some further resistance, scoring 20 and 18 respectively, but the required rate continued to creep up as Jersey attempted to force the issue.

When that partnership was broken, the burden shifted onto Josh Lawrenson, who offered some fight with 14 from 13 balls, but he would run out of partners at the other end, with his side 25 runs short of the total.

Jersey must now win the remainder of their games, starting today against Ireland, and hope that results elsewhere go in their favour in order to qualify.
