ROZEL ROVERS manager Tim Pryor says winning the Women’s Jersey FA Cup will crown a successful season, after watching his side beat St Lawrence 3-1 in the semi-final.
First-half goals from Roisin Flynn and Nilza Velosa had put a dominant Rozel side into a 2-0 lead at the break, but Sophie Botterill’s strike for St Lawrence set up a nervy finish.
However, Rozel held on and sealed the win when Tiff Sundby snaked her way through the St Lawrence defence to score and put the game beyond doubt.
The Sea-gals will face JTC Jersey Wanderers in the final on 10 May.
‘We said beforehand that this was our biggest game of the season because if we can go on to win this cup, we finish the season with two cups and probably finishing second place in the league, which I think will be seen as a successful season following a really dominant season last time,’ said Pryor.
‘Whereas if we don’t win this, we end up with one cup and, finishing in second place, I think we see that as maybe not living up to what we would have hoped this season.’
There is still an outside chance that Rozel could win the Women’s League – and the treble – for the second year in a row. They currently top the league on goal difference, seven goals better off than St Lawrence, but the Saints still have one match to play, against Grouville this Sunday morning.
Although much improved recently, Grouville have not won a point all season.
‘We’re hoping Grouville can do us a favour in their last game of the season,’ Pryor added.
‘They are improving and were narrowly beaten by Wanderers in their last game. So we’ve got a bit of hope there.’
While their chances of retaining the league title may be slim, Rozel have found some form in the latter half of the campaign and Pryor is feeling positive about his side’s chances against Wanderers in the final.
‘The players are in confident mood,’ he said. ‘We’ve got good availability of players which helps after the impact to the season where some players were off-Island and we had some injuries.
‘But at the minute we’ve got good attendance at training, good numbers available and we’ve been getting some good results.’
