The Alderney-raised welterweight was the pick of the bunch for the top honour at Beau Sejour following a memorable year on the national stage, and there was a boost for those backing minority sports in Jersey as freestyle BMX rider Alex Coleborn finished as runner-up.
Guernsey’s GB track athlete Cameron Chalmers finished third, ahead of Island archer Lucy O’Sullivan.
Earlier in the evening, Jersey Reds were crowned Waves Team of the Year for the third time, thanks to their best-ever campaign in English rugby’s second tier.
Both of the special accolades for 2017 went to Jersey athletes, with gymnast Alex Buesnel claiming the coveted Michael Lucas Sporting Hero Award and England netball star Serena Guthrie being chosen to collect the Judges Award for Achievement.
Guernsey sports fans were celebrating the success of Chalmers’ younger brother, Alastair, who claimed the PraxisIFM Rising Star Award.
Chalmers beat Caesarean duo Ed Fossey (motorsport) and Cameron Pirouet (shooting) to the honour, plus fellow Guernseyman Seb Priaulx (motorsport).
There were further home cheers for Chris Griffiths, who was named Source Recruitment Coach of the Year for his efforts in guiding Raiders Ladies to their first league title in National Challenge South East South Division I.
