NINE-MAN Jersey Bulls produced a remarkable defensive display to hold on for a 2-1 victory over Ashford Town (Middlesex) at Springfield Stadium.
The Bulls were reduced to nine men inside five minutes of each other during a chaotic spell at the end of the first half, but somehow held on to secure three points in front of almost 1,000 home supporters.
Toby Ritzema had put the Bulls in control with two goals inside the opening half-hour, heading home Sammy Henia-Kamau’s pinpoint cross before doubling the advantage with a composed finish.
But the game was turned on its head in the 35th minute when James Carr was shown a second yellow card for bringing down Ashford’s Arif Bala on the counter-attack.
The Bulls’ task became even greater just five minutes later when James Sunley was shown a straight red card for an accidental but reckless high boot, leaving Elliot Powell’s side with nine players for the remainder of the match.
Harry Curtis was introduced for Henia-Kamau to help restore some defensive balance, with the home side forced to spend virtually the entire second half protecting their two-goal advantage.
Ashford immediately turned up the pressure, but the Bulls defended resolutely, with Euan Van Der Vliet making a series of crucial saves.
The goalkeeper, making his 200th appearance for the Bulls, produced an outstanding stop from Jack Arnold at point-blank range in the 53rd minute.
The Bulls had precious little going forward, with Lorne Bickley often isolated up front, but every clearance and tackle was greeted by huge cheers from the home crowd.
Ashford eventually found a way through in the 80th minute when Arnold was afforded too much space on the left before finding the near corner.
That set up a nervy final ten minutes, but Van Der Vliet was again equal to the challenge, producing another superb save to push an Ashford effort wide for a corner before making another crucial stop in the 90th minute.
Even a late flurry of Ashford corners could not break Jersey’s resolve, with Powell’s side holding on for a memorable three points.
It was a performance built on discipline, character and sheer determination – and one which saw the Bulls make Springfield a fortress once again.
