ISAAC Thompson has booked his place in tonight’s men’s 200m backstroke final, scheduled to get under way at 8.27pm.
The 18-year-old clocked 2:03.66 seconds in this morning’s heats, just over a second outside his entry time, suggesting there is still more to come when he returns to the pool later this evening.
Samuel Sterry has also secured a reserve spot for the final after posting 2:08.24. Should any of the eight finalists withdraw before the race, the Jerseyman will be promoted into the field.
With South Africa’s Pieter Coetze – fresh from claiming gold in the 50m backstroke on Saturday – among the finalists, a medal may be a tall order.
Nevertheless, the stage is set for Thompson to test himself against some of the Commonwealth’s very best as another Jersey swimmer lines up in a Games final.
