THE Walkers Jersey Under-17 boys produced the finest performance by an Island side at this level after finishing runners-up at the National Counties Championships.
The Walkers-backed side won six of their seven matches to reach the national final for the first time, scoring 30 goals before suffering the cruellest of defeats as Surrey edged a dramatic title decider in sudden-death shuffles.
Lead coach Graeme Ferguson said: “From the first game to the final shuffle, this group demonstrated everything we ask of Jersey players – hard work, resilience, discipline and enjoyment of the game.
“To reach the National Counties final is a remarkable achievement, and every player contributed to that success. I couldn’t be prouder of this team and what they have accomplished together.”
The competition covered three days, and Jersey made the perfect start on day one with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cornwall.
After conceding first, Jake Le Boutillier (above, right) equalised before Ollie Ferguson converted a penalty flick to complete the comeback.
They followed that with a commanding 4-0 win over Shropshire, Le Boutillier helping himself to a hat-trick while Rufus Aston also found the net.
Day two brought more impressive displays.
Jersey swept aside Berkshire 6-2 before producing arguably their standout performance of the tournament with an emphatic 8-0 victory over Essex.
The remarkable Le Boutillier struck six times in an exhibition of finishing, while Ed Hodgson and Ben Vieira also got on the scoresheet.
Their only setback came against Hampshire.
Kobi Helmholt-Kneisel (left) fired Jersey ahead and Le Boutillier added Jersey’s second from a penalty corner, but Hampshire responded to claim a 4-2 victory.
The defensive efforts of Jersey’s Vieira, Harry Cutting, Hugo Gomersall, Harry Le Brocq and goalkeeper Will Wilson earned praise from the coaching staff.
After qualifying for the semi-final stage against London, any disappointment looked to be quickly vanished.
The boys in red twice fought back through Louis Bell and Le Boutillier before Helmholt-Kneisel put them in front.
He then capped a stunning individual display by weaving past several defenders and the goalkeeper to seal a memorable 4-2 victory and book a place in the final.
A powerful Surrey side awaited in the showpiece, but Jersey again rose to the occasion.
After dominating early proceedings, Bell created the opener for Le Boutillier before Surrey equalised with their only clear chance of the first half.
Le Boutillier restored the lead with a superbly deflected penalty corner after the break, his 14th goal of a remarkable campaign, only for Surrey to level once more from a penalty corner.
Jersey were all over Surrey like a rash in the closing stages, but were unable to break through and find a winner.
Finals often deliver in drama, and this clash proved no different. The contest was eventually settled by penalty shuffles.
Both goalkeepers produced outstanding saves during the opening five attempts to send the match to sudden death.
But it was Surrey who converted the decisive effort in sudden death to deny Jersey the title.
Although they fell agonisingly short of gold, the runners-up finish represents the best-ever result by a Jersey U17 boys’ team at the National Counties Championships and capped a sensational tournament.
