Jersey’s Commonwealths Games has sadly began with defeat, after Bowls star Taylor Greechan was beaten 2-0 by Isle of Man’s Mark McGreal.
Greechan started brightly, but fell 10-5 in the first set before being beaten with one end remaining in the second set.
Speaking to JEP Sports Reporter Archie Corbett post-match, Greechan said: “The first game was always going to bring some nerves, I think that showed in the score which was obviously the worst start possible.
“I didn’t get off to the best start, but I felt like I grew into the game and I took confidence from that into the second set.”
Greechan raced to a 4-0 lead in set two, but errors let his opponent back into the contest.
“I did falter slightly again after a good start start of the second . I was keeping it down to only 1s which was okay, but I conceded a silly 4 and that was it from there really. I knew from there it was going to be a tough challenge to get back into the match.”
Despite defeat, Greechan has enjoyed the opening days of the Games.
“The event itself has been amazing so far. To be here itself is an honor and to play the first game was something I’ll always remember.
“For a bowler, we’re not used to this. We generally see the same venues in the same countries, but to be here in this arena at a competition of this scale is really special.”
Looking ahead to his second match tomorrow, Greechan added: “There’s definitely positive points I can take forwards from this match. There were mistakes, but I’ll regroup and recalibrate and put those things behind me.”
Greechan is next back in action tomorrow in the Men’s Singles from 9.55am against Royden Aperau of the Cook Islands.
