JERSEY Leonis ABC are returning to the Radisson Hotel with a bang tomorrow, presenting a thrilling night of amateur boxing against strong talent in the Wales Select.
“We’re looking at fairly tough opponents this weekend, Wales are always known for being quite tough and are very high level – so it certainly isn’t going to be an easy night and it will make great competition,” said Miguel Ferreira, Coach and Club Manager at Jersey Leonis.
“To be honest, I’m so proud of the team, they’ve been training hard, doing all the sessions and putting in so much effort. No matter what happens on the night, I’ll be proud and I’m quietly confident we can do well.
“Ex WBO world champion Enzo Maccarinelli is also coming over with a couple of his boxers – he’ll be bringing over his belts and taking photos, which is quite exciting for everyone.”

An action-packed card of 13 bouts looks set to enthral the crowds – commencing at 8pm with doors opening at 7pm – all of which exciting and evenly matched to show tons of promise.
“They will be very even bouts – we match the boxers as per their level, as that’s what makes people improve,” Ferreira continued. “What we’ve found in the past with Wales is that they’re all very tough and very fit, so if we out-skill them and have similar fitness levels, then we’ll hopefully put ourselves in good position for victory.
“We have to match up our boxers with high level opposition as it’s so important for their development, and it really gives a true reflection of their level. If you don’t, then you’ll struggle to move on to national competitions and progress your level.”
Among the 13 explosive bouts lies four promising debuts, with heavy-hitter Harrison Le Sueur, Alfie Murphy and Marvin O’Connor making their competitive debuts, while 10-year-old star Callum Le Monnier will step between the ropes for the first time in a skills bout.
“First thing’s first, what we want is for everyone to have a good experience and enjoy themselves, but there’s so much to be excited about,” added the Club Manager.
Veteran Cristovao Rodrigues will return to headline the card, and will be eager to bounce back into the win column following a narrow decision loss last time out.
Other standouts from the programme include Adam Gilley, who starred in Leonis’ last show with a highlight-reel finish in the second round – so he’ll be keen to follow that up with another quality performance this time around. In addition, Coen Le Monnier will be coming back into the fray, after edging out the decision in one of the last show’s most entertaining bouts.
Unfortunately, Deacon Everett’s opponent has only just recently dropped out, leaving no time for Jersey Leonis to find a replacement. However, the young talent was said to deserve his plaudits, after putting in admirable efforts in training.
When asked what made the Leonis boxing events so special, Ferreira replied: “Honestly, it’s the support that we get – the support that the Jersey crowd gives to boxing is unbelievable, you just don’t get this anywhere else.

“Some professional shows in the UK don’t even get half the support we do, which tells you how unbelievable it is. It’s always a great atmosphere down there, as the local crowd are always so supportive, so respectful and not nasty – which is something we really pride ourselves on.”
