The league which Jersey Bulls Women team currently top with ten straight wins, Surrey Division 1, is to be split into two with all points reset to zero following yesterday’s game against Cranleigh.

The move by the league organisers, which has both surprised and disappointed officials and players at a number of clubs, means the Jersey Bulls Women team must now reset its bid to earn promotion from the South East Counties Women’s Football League Surrey Division One.

After the first 12 league fixtures — the Bulls’ final match in this phase takes place this Sunday as one other game was voided — the division will be divided into a top and bottom halves, based on current standings. The top group will then contest a mini-league, playing each other once, with the top two promoted at the end of the season.

However, no points from the previous matches will carry forward, meaning all teams will begin the promotion phase level on zero points.

Club Chairman Adam Budworth said: “We were surprised and disappointed to learn — several months into the season — that points would not carry over into the second phase. This was not our understanding at the start of the campaign.

“We raised our concerns directly with the league to share our view that resetting points diminishes the value of performances across the opening phase. Unfortunately, despite our representations, the league has chosen to maintain its position.”

However, Mr Budworth said the club’s focus is firmly on what comes next: “While we’re frustrated and somewhat baffled by the decision, we’re not dwelling on it. This squad has worked incredibly hard to put itself in a strong position, and that effort doesn’t disappear because of a reset.

“Our response will be to channel that energy into the next phase of the season, approach every game with the same intensity, and aim to win the matches that matter most.”

Team manager Chad Morris added: “We’re so grateful to have had the opportunity to play at this level in a fantastic league, and its been a great experience for the players, fans, sponsors and all involved in the club.

“What we really need now is for our amazing fans to rally round and get behind the team once again to help us regain regain top spot, and push for promotion.”
